Italian municipality belonging to the Alta Valtellina mountain community, in the province of Sondrio, Lombardy, located 1225 metres above sea level.
Famous for its ski slopes as well as its thermal baths, from which it most likely takes its name, bormo = hot spring. Already known and appreciated at the time of the ancient Romans with its three thermal baths.
Headquarters of the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1985 and 2005, while in 2008 the Alpine Ski World Cup finals were held. Every 29th December, there is a downhill race on the Pista Stelvio which counts for the World Cup qualifiers.
It features about 50 km of slopes, with a vertical drop of 1800 metres, one of the largest in Lombardy. First Italian locality to use a system that allows you to pay for a ski pass without going to the cash desk.
In 2000, European short track championships were held at the Braulio ice rink.
Between 1953 and 2017, Bormio also hosted the Giro d'Italia stage 7 times.
